erin marie king

is a contemporary abstract painter. Her artistic practice is a way of being present and feeling grateful. She finds inspiration everywhere and collects these tidbits like artifacts—daily rhythms, a striking color combination, an interesting outfit, the way light shines through the kitchen in the morning, wildflowers adorning a mountain trail, and on and on… Erin savors these relics of life—of love, of care, of celebration, of relaxation, of community—and translates them into somewhat off-kilter expressive abstraction, giving these moments a new perspective.

Her paintings are brought to life via free and intuitive compositions, large blocks of color, abstracted forms, and gestural mark making. Adding layers, undoing layers—Erin’s process is an iterative journey of building up texture and scraping away areas of transparency to reveal the layers below. Plus, she likes things a bit awkward, even “ugly,” so she sprinkles a little grit across all her works.

She believes happiness is chosen, so while her art practice is therapeutic, the final artwork is often playful, joyful, and optimistic. Erin hopes her pieces draw you in and invite you to relish the imperfect beauty in living.

Erin has loved to create art for as long as she can remember—beginning formally in high school, then studying Studio Art at Indiana University, exploring Art & Architecture while studying abroad in Vienna, Austria, and ultimately beginning her studio practice in 2016. Born and raised in Cincinnati, OH, Erin has traveled extensively (favorites include New Zealand, Thailand, and Peru) and lived in Boston, Santa Monica, and now Denver.

When not in the studio, you can find Erin enjoying the beautiful mountains of Colorado with her husband and two children, sipping her perpetually reheated cup of coffee, and updating her family’s historic 125+ year old home.
